Project Prompt

Design and produce a finished piece of furniture using both internal and external resources from RIT, focusing on real-world small to medium-scale domestic manufacturing. This project challenged to create a functional and aesthetically refined design while considering production constraints, materials, and manufacturability. Through concept development, prototyping, and fabrication, gaining hands-on experience in furniture production, resulting in a final piece documented with sketches, 3D models, material selections, process insights, and high-quality photography.

Why This?

This final chair design was chosen from all the ideation options because it uniquely balances aesthetics, functionality, and conceptual depth. The layered wooden structure provides a striking visual effect, enhancing privacy while maintaining an open feel. The rich dark wood contrasts beautifully with the bold colored cushion, offering both comfort and a regal appearance. Additionally, the design effectively integrates form and function, making it a statement piece that invites interaction while ensuring ergonomic support.

Process

The chair's creation began with ideation and multiple design iterations, focusing on a balance of aesthetics, functionality, and privacy. After finalizing the concept, a detailed 3D model was developed to refine proportions, structure, and material choices. Pine wood was selected for its lightweight yet durable properties, and it was finished with a dark walnut stainto achieve a rich, elegant look. For added comfort, foam was used to create a removable cushion, allowing users to customize their seating experience based on preference. The cushion was upholstered in green fabric to create a striking contrast against the dark wood. Partnering with LRC Woodworking, the design was fabricated with precision, using expert craftsmanship to cut, assemble, and finish the wooden elements. The final piece was carefully assembled, finished with protective coatings, and quality-checked to ensure it met the original vision, resulting in a statement chair that is both visually striking and functional.
